The US Army has selected the Belleville 950 Combat Mountain Hiker as the new combat boot for troops in Afghanistan. The Belleville 950 has a stiffer and 20 percent thicker sole, designed to ease foot strain, and increase traction for troops crossing broken (often rocky) terrain while carrying typical heavy combat loads (over 30 kg). The upper portion of the Belleville 950 is water resistant leather. The Belleville 950s are not suitable for full-time use, because of the stiffness. So troops will continue to use their current, less stiff and more padded, combat boots. But when they are heading out into the hills, they will wear their Belleville 950s.

Over the next four months, the manufacturer will deliver 25,000 pairs of the Belleville 950s. Because of the urgent need for these boots, they won’t be available to the civilian market until later this year, at the earliest. This use of a commercial boot design is nothing new. Over the last decade, the army and marines have changed their attitudes towards combat boots. Instead of trying to design boots themselves, the military has recognised the superior design of commercial boots created for hikers, mountain climbers and outdoor activists in general. This has resulted in a new generation of combat boots that are more durable, and comfortable, than earlier generations of combat footwea

Good walking boots with plenty of grip may be the most important piece of equipment for an organised walk in the Peak District next month.

The Caves, Stone and Soup trek takes place on Saturday 19th February, lasting from 10:00 GMT to 16:00 GMT although it covers less than five miles in distance.

"Occasionally wet and slippery underfoot" conditions are a major reason for this, with the event beginning in Birchover village and encountering "a world of druids, hidden castles, hermits' caves and mysterious stones".

The national park authority advises stout footwear and waterproofs are among the essentials, as well as £5.50 for the warm soup that will be provided on this family-orientated trek.

It is one of many upcoming walks being organised by the national park, with others including a challenging walk on Kinder Scout.

The hike will take in the northern edges of the high plateau on January 30th, with winter jackets likely to come in handy on the cold, flat upland, which is 2,000 ft above sea level and exposed to the wind.

These simple maintenance checks will give you an excellent opportunity to keep your chainsaw in a "happy frame of mind." Whether you use a gas or electric machine, performing these checks are vital.

1. For starters, check your chain. You'll be looking for wear and sharpness because a chain in bad condition can be a potential safety hazard.

Much of the damage can be attributed to compromised root systems that cannot keep up with water demands of aboveground tissue. Excess rain led to saturated soils during May, June and in some areas July. Oxygen is required for optimum root growth, but saturated soils have limited oxygen and led to poor root growth. As soils warm in the summer, root mass naturally decreases in cool-season turf as root senescence (mortality) exceeds new root growth. Other stresses (traffic, heavy soils, compaction, over-watering or too much rainfall, poor drainage, low mowing, herbicide applications, etc.) can exaggerate this response. Unfortunately, the turf now has to be managed in a survival mode through August.

They shared a few tips that under typical years management would not be made, but may be needed currently just to limit damage:

1) Keep the areas on the dry side to maximize soil oxygen, but at the same time don’t let turf go into even slight water stress. Water lightly and frequently because any water that moves past the root system cannot be used by the plant. Insure all heads are properly functioning.

2) Continue mowing as needed, but be sure turf is well-watered to insure no extra damage. Consider mowing in the morning or evenings when temperature and water demand is lowest.

3) Be sure to alternate mowing patterns on all turf areas, especially areas with frequent mowing.

4) Apply preventative controls for white grubs and brown patch, pythium, patch diseases or even dollar spot. Extra stress from pest feeding or disease infection could cause widespread damage.

5) On the other hand, avoid applying herbicides which can be stressful in warm temperatures.

6) Maintain regular irrigation on spring/summer seedings no matter how established they look. DO NOT let the turf go dormant because new seedlings do not have dormancy mechanism and will die under drought stress. This one of the primary reasons why spring or summer seeding is discouraged.

If you don't wear Foundry Boots and start playing with hot metal, and who doesn't enjoy doing that, you will soon find your laces melted, or even better on fire! So we did a quick unrehearsed trial of the ones I sell down the barn yesterday....

Update - of course I should have done a comparison video - here is the best I could do on my own juggling angle grinder in one hand and camera in the other..I didn't manage to get as many sparks on target on the standard mixed fibre bootlace but I think the charring and weakening is quite obvious.

When the shoe is laced, the deubré is centered between the first two eyelets (closest to the toe), with the shoelace passing through and behind the deubré.
The term deubré originates with a Nike footwear designer, Damon Clegg. Maybe you have never owned boots before, or maybe you want some tips on unique styles of boot lacing. Lacing boots is similar to lacing shoes, but the extra room allows for some more options. This article will teach some of the basics and a few extra looks for your boots.

Steps

Select the boot lace. Most likely you have a tall pair of boots, but be sure with whatever style of boots you own, get the right length laces. Ask a sales clerk for advice or read the package to determine the right boot lace length.

Diagonal Lace Method

Start lacing the boot. Starting at the bottom, put laces through the outside of the eyelets. Pull the laces up vertically as far as they go to ensure they are even.
Cross the first lace diagonally over the tongue and insert into the second eyelet from the outside in.

Insert lace from the outside

Continue lacing, being sure to always insert one side before the other to keep the pattern uniform until the top of the boot is reached.
At the top, either tie the laces in a bow and tuck the loops and ends in, or tie off the ends and tuck in, to keep it from looking messy.
Do the same for the other boot, only be sure to put the opposite side side lace crossed over the top to make a symmetrical look.

Straight Across Lace Method

Start the laces the same way as for diagonal laces, but instead of crossing the lace over the tongue, bring it underneath the next eyelet up on that side and insert it inside-out on the third hole from the bottom.

Cross the lace over the tongue and insert it outside-in directly across from the hole it came from.
Take the other lace from the bottom hole and bring it up underneath to the eyelet directly above the first. Insert the lace inside-out and bring it horizontally across to the second hole on the other side.
Insert the lace outside-in and bring it underneath again, skipping the hole that the other side lace will go into.
Continue lacing to the top. The other boot can be done the same way.

Tips

Silver laces look great with black boots.
If you choose to tie off your laces, you won't be able to get get your boots off without a lot of effort.
Laced boots take a lot of work to put on or take off so if you're pressed for time, wake up earlier to deal with your boots. It is especially true for knee-high boots, as it could take even up to 5 minutes (per boot) to lace them up.
Because of the way laced boots fit, they may rub your heels. You can buy heel inserts (good ones) to keep your feet from moving around as much inside the boots.
If you own a cat, put the cat outside of the room before lacing or unlacing your boots. They try to "help" by chasing the laces.
If you lace your boots straight across, the laces will end up on the same side at the top. Just tie in a quick overhand knot, tuck 'em in, and you're ready to go.

Blacking Boots

Boots, especially top-boots, to look well, to be easily cleaned and to wear long, should be put on trees immediately after use. The surface should then be cleaned with a hard brush, and if necessary with a sponge or water-brush and a little warm water. When thus made wet, or if they are already damp, the boots should be put away on their trees to dry; because it will be impossible to polish them as long as they are in a moist condition. When all dirt has been removed and the boots are dry, a coating of blacking as thin as possible should be applied, and the boots polished while the blacking on them is still damp. Boots that are in use should be boned at least once a week, and if possible immediately they are taken off the feet; because at that time the leather is soft and pliable by reason of the heat and warmth of the feet. Bottle blacking is better than cake blacking; because it can be put on thinner and more evenly. When cake blacking is used, boots as a rule will require to be frequently washed; because, in this case, the blacking will be apt to cake in irregular lumps on the boots. Boning makes the surface of the leather smooth and compact, and takes out creases.

A little glycerine rubbed into the boots occasionally, helps to soften and preserve the leather, and it also improves the polish.

In the cleaning of top-boots it is a great convenience to have the tops detachable. If they be fixed, the tops will have to be protected while the black leather is being cleaned; and the black leather, while the tops are being dressed. This protection is usually obtained by means of paper, which in one case is placed over the top and is doubled under its lower end; and in the other case, it is put round the upper part of the black leather, and between it and the top.

For blacking boots, a hard brush, a blacking brush and a shining brush are required. There is very little difference between the two last mentioned brushes.
